Studio note
I would rather wait for the light than build it
Most of what I do happens before the first frame: finding out which window the room has, what time the sun clears the building opposite, and what you are hoping to be able to use the pictures for. Lamps and reflectors come out only when the day refuses to cooperate.
I shoot digital for coverage and keep a film body loaded alongside it, usually a slow colour stock for daylight and something faster for interiors at dusk. Editing is done by hand, one frame at a time, with no presets carried between jobs — which is why a gallery takes a fortnight rather than a weekend.
Direction, in my experience, works best as conversation. If you are told to relax you will not. If you are asked a real question you forget the camera is there.
